Lessons learned from a habitual outdoor runner

Spring-Summer 2021

I guess it is time to update my records here. With work, life, and the pandemic time has escaped my attention from posting here.

The good news is that my legs continue to get better from the previous injuries and I have had several sub 9-minute miles while running, which is a big deal for me as part of this recovery.

March-August 2021 Summary

Breaking it down by month

Monthly summary

Most of the cycling has been on Kermit as Goose is having bottom bracket issues again. I did have my first on the road flat this summer. I was 12 miles into a ride, about 9 miles from home, and luckily 1.5 miles from a Walmart at 7:00 am on a Saturday morning.

I do keep a tire/tube repair kit on the bike with me although I’ve not had to use it until now. It was the rear tire and it was really worn out so I was hoping Walmart might have a tube and tire I could purchase instead of just trying to patch the old stuff. Of course, the rear tire is more complicated to replace or repair.

I was in luck, they had both tube and tire so outside of the store as the sun was gaining strength, I started the repair. SNAP! The handy little multi-wrench in my repair kit snapped immediately upon first use. Back into Walmart to purchase a small adjustable wrench.

After completing the replacement and pumping as much air as I could with my portable hand pump, I started the 9-mile trek home. I was tired and hungry when I arrived home, but so thankful for how well things worked out.

The weather is starting to cool a bit here in the first week of September and I’m sure before too long I’ll be back to layering clothes to meet the change. Be safe out there folks and keep putting in the work to stay as healthy as you can.

Heading into Winter 2020

It’s been a while… first, the stats for the last few months.

Thankfully, I am able to alternate running and cycling each day. As winter is coming and road conditions become unpredictable, there may be more running than cycling days so I’m hoping my legs are supportive. This morning’s ride (route below) was chilly and the wind was strong enough to be an added challenge

I’m still grateful for the continued injury recovery that has allowed me to keep exercising everyday! It’s been a long road to this point and there is more work to do before I can start running faster and longer. I am okay with that!

Running is an amazing thing for me and when I lost it due to injury it was tough to accept. I really wasn’t sure I’d ever be able to run again so I am jazzed to be doing this much.

June 2020 review

Overall, June was a pretty nice month weather-wise. There were some cool days and then the warmer/muggier days increased.

While I still cannot run as much as I would like, I continue to work on it and get a run in 3-4 days per week. As a bike update, all the parts and tools came in to fix the broken spoke on Goose. Now that the spoke is fixed and the rear wheel no longer wobbles, it is clear the bottom-bracket bearings are on their way out as there is a lot of crunchy sounds and vibrations originating between the pedals. I do have a new set of bearings on hand so I need to make the time to get them installed. Meanwhile, Kermit is doing well for my bike rides.

Below is the snapshot of stats for June.

April+May Stats and June update

Spring was pretty nice this year. There was a wide array of temperature variations and some pretty wet periods, but nothing horrible in our area.

Now that we’re mostly through June, the temperature and humidity have been more prevalent which makes the cool mornings all that more appreciated. One cool Monday, a lady I intersect with regularly while out on my morning routine mentioned how quickly we’ll be feeling the humidity and she was right, by that Friday morning the moist air had made breathing more laborious.

I run 3-4 times a week and bike the alternating days while keeping up with some short walks during the day. While my legs still protest a bit, I’m extremely grateful for the ability to run 6-7 miles again at a reasonable pace. For example, here is today’s run:

March 2020, COVID-19, Stayin’ healthy

If you’re on planet earth you already know what’s happening in the world, so I’ll only share my March updates.

As I mentioned in an earlier post I was able to run a little again and how wonderful that is. I’m still taking it easy and trying different routine alterations to see how my knees react. I found three contiguous days of running about 5 miles, even at a slow pace, was a bit much for the knees, so whenever possible, I’m alternating running and cycling.

Yes, I am calling what I do as running, even though it’s slow and likely looks like a character Tim Conway used to play on the Carol Burnett show. It’s still dark in the morning when I run so at least I’ve got that going for me. Not that there are many people out in the fields where I’m running, or even in the town segments.

The March activity report shows that I’m still moving! I’ve learned a lot about recovery the last 6 months and continue to learn what works and what was a bad idea. If I can look for benefits from this period, it would include additional stretching (Yoga/Pilates) and strength exercises that I’ve incorporated. Also, just how amazing our bodies are at healing if we give them the proper help along the way.
